JCVD & TDVC

I remember when I saw JVCD in cinemas back in June last year, the movie felt so real, it felt so true. I can honestly say it’s Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best work yet. The autocaricature along with that long monologue where he stares deep into your eyes and pours his heart out… just beautiful.

This French Blu-ray edition is the best available on the market. Boasting an intentional almost colourless MPEG-4 AVC video encode, along with a perfect DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 French track, it’s a must, technically.

Gaumont have released this movie in a good looking cardboard flip-page thingy. It looks nice, but I’m afraid of breaking it. Will put it in a bag to avoid any scuffs.

Da Vinci Code SteelDa Vinci Code Digibook

I’ve also ordered the German SteelBook of The Da Vinci Code from an Austrian website. Should be receiving it in a couple of days.
I was just about to get the French Digibook release, which you can see on the right, which looks really cool and is quite thick. The only downside is that the French audio is the only track that has a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 encode, whereas the German SteelBook has an English track with that audio, hence why I went for it. Might get the Digibook if it drops in price.

Who said trading sucked?

You know the whole “You get a little, I get a little” motto? Well it was verified once again this morning, when I got a nice box from a friend in the US. All excellent movies I’ll take joy in watching very soon.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete [Japan]

Okay so I forgot to mention this one yesterday, but I just have to… it’s freaking beautiful, another great import, thanks to YesAsia!

Can’t forget the Amarays

There’s something about the recent recession coupled with the change of currency values that makes importing that much more appealing. I used to snort at British prices but had to cave in as that was the only place I could get some CDs from of bands I love (such as Muse, Funeral For A Friend, etc.).
Things have changed now, the current currency exchange values marks the British Pound to 1,13193 Euros, which is virtually the same.

So I’ve been hanging around Amazon.co.uk lurking for good deals and their current “3 for the price of 2″ offer hasn’t let me down since. Ordered a new batch to fill up the comedy void (should be getting some US ones from a trade) along with a nice box set of two movies you won’t forget:

A bit of everything

Hello there. It’s the middle of the week, I’ve only started my job and done a day and a half that I am already beat. I’ve just got to get used to it and fall into a proper sleeping pattern.

It doesn’t attenuate my love for Blu-rays one bit. I just feel that I’ve gotten a lot of movies lately that I haven’t had the time to watch. I’ll play cacth up very soon.

I received a nice package from Amazon.de this morning containing a SteelBook I thought had gone out of print, so it was a very nice surprise to find out it was still available:

BB/TDK DE Steel
Batman Begins / The Dark Knight [Germany]

Besides those good news, I was sad to discover yesterday that I had a package at the post office which wasn’t delivered due to “taxes”. I discovered that my fear was true when I went to pick it up after work this afternoon: it was indeed my package from Amazon.com which had been opened and verified. I was left with a hefty 12,15€ customs’ fee, more than what I paid for shipping! Damn…
Anyway, in it were two movies I got for their awesomeness both within themselves and packaging-wise; they’re part of Warner’s Digibooks releases in the US:

Digibooks
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest [USA] / The Shawshank Redemption [USA]

And these are the amarays I got both from .com and .de along with the BDs up there:

Amarays 01/04/09
Hellboy – Director’s Cut [USA] / Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – Director’s Cut [Germany] / The Machinist [Germany]

Guillermo del Toro is in the house

Received this boxset from a seller off eBay today. The envelope it came in was shabby and with 0,23€, out of the 4€ I gave him, used, it makes me wonder where the other 3,77 went?
Anyway, I cannot wait to watch these movies, they look so freaking awesome and I’m a huge fan of del Toro’s work. I have Pan’s Labyrinth on BD already (German SteelBook) but it lacked subtitles or audios tracks I understand, so now I’m blessed with a Spanish DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on each movie along with French subs.
El Laberinto de Fauno and El Orfanato, here I come!

101 BDs now. :D

I got the Blus

Today is an important day for SteelBook collectors as it marks the release of eleven (yes, 11) new Blu-ray SteelBooks by TF1 Vidéo… or so I thought.

I went to one of my favourite stores (Fnac) to check out the releases. To my disappointment, they had only received 5 out all of the releases. My deceit got taken to a higher level when I saw that one of my top movies of all time, The Shawshank Redemption, slated for a release today, only got the amaray case treatment… especially with such a dull cover:

Shawshank BD FR

I then decided to get some of the other releases instead, and grabbed The Fountain and Ladder 49:

Here are the pictures I took instore for the other releases they had received (the others should arrive tomorrow):

Crank

Immortel (ad vitam)

I had some rebates from previous purchases so I decided to grab yet another 4 movies from their “4 for 50€” sale: Cloverfield, The Day After Tomorrow, Le Pacte des Loups and Starship Troopers. And another set I’ve had my eyes on for a while which contains both The X-Files movies in a Special Fnac Edition set.

I Am Legend – Ultimate Collector’s Edition (USA)

I didn’t think it would be this beautiful but it really is. The Ultimate Collector’s Edition of I Am Legend has arrived. :D
Sadly, due to pressure during transit, a corner of the pack got ripped, bleh. I didn’t outsource myself to acquire it so I guess it’s a good deal. ;)

Here’s a pic of the beast:

Blu Addi(c)tions

Indy 4 Cover

Received this Indy 4 FutureShop Exclusive Blu-ray SteelBook this morning from my good friend, Gui (a.k.a. tiger).
This brings the number to 3 out of the 4 FS Exclusive BD SteelBooks I’m after and the fourth one (I Am Legend) is in transit right now. Can’t wait.

I also took the time to go check out the “4 for 50€” offer at Fnac and picked up some new movies, two of which I’ve never seen before: Blood Diamond and The Pianist; and then Totall Recall and The Rock to fill my action fix!

Terminator 2: Skynet Edition Endoskeleton & SteelBook in France

T2 Endoskeleton France

I know this might not interest a lot of this blog’s readers (unless I’m the only one who reads it?).

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that the Skynet Edition Terminator 2 re-release that’s coming out in Germany, in the UK (Play.com Exclusive) and in the USA is also getting a French release.

It will be sold for 99€ and comes out on May 26th (unless we get a delay like everywhere else).
Amazon.fr placeholder.

I’d also like to point out that it’ll be a chance for studios to release the other movies (yet still no Terminator):
- Terminator 2: Judgment Day on May 26th 2009 (SteelBook!)
- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines on May 20th 2009

It’s good to see that T3 will be getting a proper release compared to its old, and now discontinued, American counterpart which had lossy audio and a 1080i resolution.
